Call for applications will re-open in November 2019. The deadline for applications for a PhD start in 2020 will be the 3rd of January 2020.
To select the most promising students from around the world for our training program, we employ a two-step selection process consisting of a written online application and a selection symposium at the MPI.
1.) Online Application
Our application platform will be open from November 2019 until 3rd of January, 2020 (23:59 CET).
With the application we ask for
- a letter of motivation
- an idea of which group at the IMPRS-BAC you would like to work with
- a formal CV
- your certificates (you should gain your degree before October 2020)
- the names of two referees who will write a reference letter by the deadline (referee deadline: 10th of January, 2020)
- and a research proposal (best based on the project proposals from the faculty labs which will be available in autumn)
After the deadline, all applications are reviewed by the coordinator and the faculty. A shortlist of applicants will be invited to the selection symposium, which will be held on 26th - 28th of February, 2020. Invitations to the symposium will be sent out by 24th of January, 2020.
2.) Selection Syposium: The Admission Assessment Days
Invited students will stay 3 days in Berlin (26th-28th of February, 2020) and present themselves and their research in a short talk. Following this, the prospective PhD student is asked to discuss two journal articles with a panel of PIs and is interviewed by individual prospective supervisors.
Selected students can join the school in autumn, best starting on 1st of September. Individual solutions for starting dates can be found
