DRS Supervision Award for Helene Kretzmer

July 25, 2025

Congratulations to associated group leader Helene Kretzmer who received the Supervision Award from the Dahlem Research School (DRS).

The prize is awarded annually by a committee of doctoral students and DRS staff members to two supervisors involved in the DRS doctoral program. The award winners are honored for their exceptional guidance of doctoral researchers. “A good supervisor–student relationship builds trust and open communication, allowing problems to be addressed early and feedback to be constructive. It supports intellectual independence, emotional resilience, and a productive research environment. Ultimately, it shapes whether the PhD becomes a rewarding, empowering journey—or a frustrating one”, Helene comments on the importance of good supervision.

Her lab develops and applies methods for analyzing large, multimodal sequencing datasets, with a focus on epigenetic genome regulation. Using these, they investigate the causes and consequences of regulatory changes in the genome and aim to develop classification methods to improve patient care.

Helene Kretzmer earned her Ph.D. in bioinformatics from the University of Leipzig. In 2017, she joined Alex Meissner’s group at the MPIMG and later established her own group at the institute. Since October 2024, she has headed the Computational Genomics department at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam, Germany, while maintaining a laboratory at the MPIMG as an associated group.

The International Max Planck Research School for Biology and Computation is a joint graduate program of Freie Universität Berlin (FU) and the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics (MPIMG) and part of the Dahlem Research School.
