Transferable Skills Course: Statistical Literacy
Enables Life Scientists to Understand the Purpose and Uses of Classical Statistics as an Integral Part of the Scientific Method. This is the first workshop of a three-workshop-cycle on statistics (Statistical Literacy - Data Analysis with R - Data Visualization with R).

Schedule

This course will take place online. There are three group sessions:

  • 30th of November 2022, 10.30 - 12.30
  • 2nd of December 2022, 10.30 - 12.30
  • 5th of December 2022, 10.30 - 12.30

One week before the first group session you will receive access to the course material, which you will need to work through before the group session. This should take up to 2 hours of your time per day.


Content

Topics covered:

  • Good experimental design and sources of bias.
  • Systematic versus random error.
  • The distinction between samples and populations.
  • The most appropriate ways to describe samples.
  • Estimation and the principle of hypothesis testing.
  • The Standard Error of the Mean and confidence intervals.
  • Understanding and reporting uncertainty.
  • Power, Type I and type II errors.
  • Standard parametric tests and their interpretations, including p-values, test statistics and associated distributions.


Before signing up for this workshop, please make sure that you can attend all the dates and write them in your calendar. If you do not show up or cancel at very short notice, other interested students will not be able to participate.
