Barnett Newman, Who's Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue IV 1969-70, Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin
The sensory experience of this painting evoked in some an unbearable perhaps painful condition, which resulted repeatedly in altered CNS response such as vandalism
Sensitization toward physical stimulation as well as chronic pain constitutes a widespread medical problem. New approaches especially for interference with pain are urgently needed. We focus on the elucidation of intracellular signaling events underlying sensitization. Knowledge about this aspect is especially sparse.

Increasingly, genetic mutations are identified, which underly inherited mental retardation. The functional implications of the mutation for the protein, its interactors, and the connected signaling network have to be investigated. Thereby the gap between phenotype and genotype can be filled and basic mechanism of the brain can be understood.
