Current research focuses on the elucidation of genes involved in the pathogenesis of cognitive and developmental disorders including mental retardation. Further investigations on selected candidate genes include animal models and functional studies. The results will provide insight into normal and disturbed gene functions and into molecular pathways, and they will considerably improve our understanding of the biological and cellular mechanisms underlying normal brain development.
